The history of the Oud can be traced back to ancient Persia, spreading to the Arab world during the Islamic Golden Age. Often referred to as the prototype of the modern guitar, the Oud has a distinct, pear-shaped body and a short neck without frets

The main difference between an Arabic oud and a Turkish oud is Turkish ouds are generally smaller, have a brighter sound, and are tuned a whole step higher than Arabic ouds, resulting in a more taut and shrill tone compared to the fuller, deeper sound of an Arabic oud instruments share a similar design with a pear-shaped body and fretless neck, but the tuning and size variations create distinct sounds.
